The Mad Minute with Caroline Pope
Dog communicator
This animal lover knows what our pets think about us.
How long have you
been communicating with animals?
Professionally, since 1998.
How do you do it?
Telepathy. I
communicate with animals in the same way as an identical twin
understands what their sibling is thinking. Anyone can communicate
with animals, but most people are not aware of the process involved.
What do animals
say?
It varies. Most
often they tell me about the pain they are experiencing or their
frustrations. They sometimes tell me about the family dynamics of
their owners—who is bullying who. Animals know more than people give
then credit for.
What makes a good
animal communicator?
You have to be
prepared to listen and be good with animals. It is most important not
to filter what the animals are saying, even if it is offensive.
Are there many
animal communicators about?
There are only
about 10 animal communicators in the country. It is a growing
phenomenon that is becoming world recognised. There are hundreds of
animal communicators working professionally in the US.
Do animals
respond differently to you?
People tell me
they do. Some animals run in the other direction if they feel nervous,
others feel more comfortable having someone around who understands
them.
What is the most
unusual animal you have worked with?
I have
communicated with an alpaca, a wedge-tailed eagle and most of the
animals at the zoo.
Has an animal
said anything that has shocked you?
All the time.
Often they tune into my personal life, which can be very
disconcerting.
Do animals have a
sense of humour?
Definitely. When
I met this horse with a wicked sense of humour, he sent me a graphic
image of a horse pushing shit up a hill. He wanted me to tell his
owner.
Have you worked
with an animal that did not want to talk back?
Yes. Quite often
abused animals do not want to talk about their past.
What is the most
common problem people have with their pets?
Skin problems,
arthritis and miscommunication between the species. Many people try to
humanise their pets. Cats do not like the smell of air freshener in
their litter trays.
Are there problem
owners as well as problem pets?
Yes. Pets are
often easier to deal with than the owners. But I am lucky that my
clients love their pets.
What do pets
think about their owners?
Many owners are
terrified that their pets hate them. It is not true. Ninety-nine per
cent of animals love their owners.
What do you think
is a dog’s dream day?
My two dogs have
just told me they want to sleep on the bed at night, eat a large bone,
go to their favorite park and Cai would like some roast turkey to eat
later.
lf you could be
any animal, what would it be?
An eagle l like
the idea of being free.
