- Doggy Diet Tips
Paws Connect is Australia’s first pet wellbeing concept centre supporting happier, healthier lives for our pets. We offer alternative options to support a pet’s wellbeing with specialist practitioners, a hydrotherapy treadmill and a retail store. The following is posted with the kind permission of our animal naturopath Sue Martin. Sue is available Mondays at Paws Connect. Please phone to book your appointment. Does your dog love to eat the manure of other animals? If you answered “yes” this may be why. Did you know that unless fruits and veg are pulped….your dog is unable to benefit from the nutritional value found in these plants??? This is because plant cells are surrounded by a thick cellulose wall that is unable to be penetrated by our dog’s digestive system. If we feed fruits or veg that has been cut up, fed whole or grated, it will come out the other end looking much the same way as it went in. If we pulverise or pulp plant material, the cellulose wall will be broken and our four legged friends will reap the benefits. When dogs eat the manure of others they are often seeking broken down plant material (fibre) and a good source of digestive enzymes. This is called coprophagia and is more prevalent in dogs that are fed dry food. Simply put your choice of fruit and veg in a processor and blitz it until it’s a pulp. Then pop it in ice cube trays to freeze (for larger dogs you can put into zip lock bags and roll flat) and pop one out into your dogs meal. Extra fibre is especially fantastic for those pooches needing to shed a few kilos. Add extra pulp (pictured is carrot and celery) and they won’t even notice they are on a diet!

- Dandelion The Herb!
Sue Martin our animal naturopath is in at Paws Connect on Mondays. Please call to book your appointment. Dandelion (taraxacum officinale) is often overlooked as a weed in the garden…but did you know that this plant packs more in it than you could “wish” for? Super rich in potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron and copper and contain Vitamins A, B, C and D and often referred to as the “natural electrolyte”. A fabulous diuretic which naturally contains potassium and therefore is beneficial to the heart and blood pressure. Well known for its ability as a liver tonic and is a bitter herb and therefore aids digestion, increases bile production and aids fat digestion. Best of all, Dandelion is easily absorbed by the body and won’t place stress on the kidneys and therefore is a wonderful herb for your dogs and horses. You’ve probably seen your horses paw up the roots on a hot hot day! The list of benefits is long….and as always, herbs are great “when needed” and therefore it’s always best to check in with a pro before supplementing your four leggeds diet.

- Why Walk Your Dog On A Harness?
The handsome Oscar modelling the Haqihana harness. At Paws Connect we promote the use of the Haqihana Harness for dogs when working. As humans we know that whiplash accidents cause long term pain and suffering, A dog's anatomy is very similar to ours. A collar can damage the vital organs of the neck and causes pain, just like it would for us. PAIN ALWAYS AFFECTS BEHAVIOUR. Collar damage: May cause hair loss, irritation, bruises, wounds, pain. Swelling of the lymph glands, damage or rupture of the lymphatic ducts, impaired immunity, pain. Mechanical damage to the thymus can result in a decrease in T-cell amount. Tension on the collar results in a shear force causing unnatural movement that accelerates degeneration, causing osteoarthritis of the spine and possible herniation of the discs. Mechanical trauma can cause direct damage to the parasympathetic and sympathetic nerves, or indirect due to swelling and pressure from surrounding tissues. Mechanical trauma caused by a collar can lead to hypothyroidism. The cartilage of the trachea can flatten or break, resulting in a narrower diameter and thus respiratory problems AND MANY MORE

"Let's be perfectly honest with ourselves. When you finish your ride and get down from the saddle, it isn't the people who watched you ride or the officials at some event who have the right to judge you. The real thing that matters, the true judge of your ability as a horseman is standing next to you. It is the horse who will tell you by his expression, his body, and the look in his eye if you helped him, if you showed him how he can be better and if you have a partner in this dance." ~ John Saint Ryan
